The three hosts behind your VALORANT reading
We time the public VALORANT site in Europe, a Cloudflare edge, and — being upfront about it — a League of Legends host standing in for North America. All three are HTTP probes from your browser, reported as the median of three samples.
The League host is there because Riot publishes no equally stable North American VALORANT asset a browser may fetch. Both are Riot web properties, so the card still says something useful about your path toward Riot; it is simply not a title-specific measurement, and we would rather write that down than hide it. Failed or slow probes read unavailable.
Running the test before a ranked queue
Close the client: Run this with the game and its patcher shut down.
Start regional: Read the card for the region you actually queue in first.
Keep 7.8 ms in mind: Ignore differences smaller than one server frame.
Log it: Repeat weekly and keep the numbers; trends are what you act on.
In a 128-tick game, eight milliseconds is an entire server frame
Riot runs VALORANT servers at 128 ticks per second — their engineers wrote about optimising for a smooth 128 server tickrate for every player. Divide one second by 128 and each frame gets 7.8125 ms.
That is the unit worth thinking in. Route noise of eight milliseconds is not a rounding error in a tactical shooter; it is a whole frame of a peek resolving somewhere else. Riot's stated ambition is 35 ms of ping for 70% of their players — a bar you can hold your own reading up against.
Shrinking the gap before it costs you a round
- Treat differences under 8 ms as noise — that is less than one server frame, and this method cannot resolve it.
- Test with the client closed; the patcher competes for the same line.
- The European card only means something to you if you actually queue there.
- Wireless peripherals do not add latency, but a crowded 2.4 GHz band adds jitter to everything on the network.
- Housemates streaming in 4K move the needle further than any in-game network setting.
- Write your numbers down once a week; a trend beats a screenshot.
What 128 ticks buys, and what it does not
A higher tick rate shortens the interval between server updates, which is why Riot chose it for a game built on holding angles. It cannot shorten the trip your packets make to reach that server.
The two halves are independent: Riot bought the server-side half on your behalf, and the route is the half still on your side of the transaction. This page estimates that half.
Why a European card sits on a page read worldwide
The stable public asset we can time from a browser resolves in Europe, so it stays on the board and we label it honestly. For a South American or North American player it is a distance benchmark, not a target.
Use it as the far end of the scale: if the European number is enormous while your regional card is fine, routing is behaving exactly as it should.
The narrow case for lag-reduction software in a tactical shooter
Consistently high readings on a wired connection, with the client closed and the household quiet, describe a routing problem rather than a hardware one. That is where a trial of rerouting software is worth the time — with a measurement before and after, not a feeling.
